My name is Stephen Murphy and I hope to represent you as District 5's newest councilmember. Since graduating from Cal years ago, I've remained active in the City of Berkeley where I am committed to nourishing a diverse community, a place where everyone has choices for a good life.
- Professionally, as an attorney at the Alameda County Family Justice Center, I work to remedy issues of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and sexual assault, and now I also teach that subject at USF School of Law and was selected to be a 2015 Northern California Super Lawyer.
- As a member of the Berkeley Food and Housing Project's Capital Campaign I'm working to realistically address the City's increasing problem of homelessness.
- As Chair of the Planning Commission, I advocate for affordable housing, fair-paying jobs and just labor standards. I’ve fought for a vibrant downtown with sustainable growth and a green economy by defending the award-winning and voter-approved Downtown Plan.
- I serve as Vice Chair of Berkeley's Commission on the Status of Women.
I love Berkeley. I care a great deal about the quality of life here and feel fortunate that I can raise my children in this diverse, extraordinary place we call home.
As your new councilmember, I will work for you. I'll listen to your concerns and do my best to help. I'll be true to my values and will not bend to political expediency.
Talk to me; tell me what you need. I'll bring my experience with economic development, planning, housing, poverty, fair labor practices, education, and the environment -- plus women's rights and family safety -- to bear on finding a remedy.
Together, we will work toward having a city created by all – with choices for all.
We live in the greatest city in the Bay Area, and it's getting better. When elected, I'll continue to foster the city into a vibrant future while embracing its soulful history.
I hope you will join my campaign. I ask for your vote.
